He was born in Salinas, California, and spent ten years of his childhood in Mexico. He and his family later returned to Salinas, where he graduated from high school. He went on to attend the University of California, Santa Cruz, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration. After several years working in management, he entered seminary and was ordained to the priesthood on June 9, 2017.
